Principle of foreign matter inspection system

X-ray food inspection system can non-destructively inspect whether defects or foreign matters are included without disassembling the product or damaging the contents by using the transmission characteristics of X-ray. Inside the FIS device, an X-ray generator as shown in the figure below and an X-ray detector that can detect X-rays transmitted through the product are installed at the top of the system and the bottom of the conveyor respectively.

The X-ray transmitted through the inspection product is detected by the X-ray detector installed at the bottom depending on the type of product and shape of the product. As for the transmitted energy, the higher the density of the product, the higher the ratio of energy absorbed by the product, so the energy received from the detector is small. For products with the same density, the higher the product height (longer transmission length), the more energy absorbed and the less energy transmitted. Conversely, when passing through a low-density product, relatively high X-ray energy passes through the product, and the energy received by the detector increases.

For inspection, if the X-ray energy transmitted through the product is displayed to the position corresponding to the 2D plane, a black and white 2D image is created. The contrast of the black and white image corresponds to the amount of energy received at that point. The X-ray image of a product without defects or foreign objects has a unique shape of its own, and the brightness and contrast of the image are relatively constant. When a specific part of the product changes, such as when there is a defect in the product or a foreign substance is mixed, it affects the energy level received from the detector through that part, thereby causing a change in the unique image or pattern.

The X-ray food inspection system analyzes image and displays location of defects and foreign matters through image processing.
